Carpark to our room - access all the way

Outer Melbourne suburbs accommodation accessibility

It's so refreshing to have accessible hotel accommodation in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. And even more exciting because the elegance and charm of this modern new Hyatt hotel continues within its seven ( one accessible room per floor)  37sqm accessible king suites.

Hyatt Place Caribbean Park suits us perfectly as many of our family and friends live within the area. Having a sleepover at any of their homes is not possible due to my requirements, and short-stay accessible homes are extremely rare.

The comfortable, large and stylish layout of the 1 King Accessible room makes it functional for work or leisure purposes and I’m told the couch is very cosy.

The staff are extremely helpful and effortlessly accommodate hired equipment to be sent to the room. I’m thrilled that Hyatt is taking equal access more seriously. I’m glad that more people with disabilities will have more choice in where they wish to stay - and that this is a trend that will keep growing.

WEBSITE | BOOKING:

Hyatt Place Melbourne Caribbean Park

WHAT WORKED:

·    The accessible room has its own description and booking option

·      The amenities are comprehensively listed – including those game changing bed risers

·      Communication - email and phone - was wonderful. We needed bed-risers which not many people are aware of and they happily organised them and have now provided bed-risers as a future option for any other guests.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK :

 ·      Lack of photo’s and room measurements

ACCESS TO VENUE | PARKING:

·      Easy to enter from either Eastlink or through the Caribbean Business Park from Ferntree Gully Road

·      Large flat car park with an easy roll to the building

·      Plenty of undercover room for offloading luggage at the entrance before parking

WHAT’S INSIDE:

WHAT WORKED:

·      Push button timed entry doors to foyer as well as traditional swing door

·      Huge foyer and roomy elevators

·      Accessibility throughout bar and dining areas

·      Room entry door his 90cm wide

·      Inside the accessible room the carpet is reasonably easy to push a hoist or wheelchair on

·      Tiled areas are wide 1.6m wide at front entry and continue to the 2.95m x 2.45m bathroom

·      Space either side of the king bed is 1.2m and 1.3m with lovely corner couch and coffee table in situ

·      Bathroom door width 80cm

·      Space for charging and parking mobility equipment

WHAT DIDN’T WORK :

·      Room entry door is not auto opening and does not have a magnetic stop to hold it open and does not have a card swipe auto unlock at an accessible height.

IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE:

I look at the ways in which businesses present an overall inclusive experience for their patrons. While I focus on mobility access, I hope to get ideas from you and others to add observations relating to other disabilities. I take a comprehensive look at everything from initial website experience to staff attitudes. I do not comment on food (except sometimes if it’s super fab I might not be able to help myself) as you can have the joy of making up your own mind on that. Finally and importantly, I advise you to research to suit your individual needs but I hope this is a good start.

Happy accessible living and playing !
