The Spirit of Tasmania- Accessibility Review

We travelled overnight return on the Spirit of Tasmania ship, Spirit 1, between Melbourne, Vic and Devonport, Tas. We chose to sail to Tasmania as taking our modified car with my equipment was the only logical economic and convenient choice.

This was our first wheelchair-using, equipment-requiring trip to Tasmania, and despite a fantastic accessible booking process, I was still a little nervous as to how the experience would go.

Discovery Parks Warrnambool (Gunditjmara country) - Accessibility Review

This is possibly the best accessible accommodation where we could socialise as well as have space for the ever-necessary assistive tech that we’ve stayed in. After a 2 year gap Gaz and I met great friends that are travelling around our fair land.

As I need to bed height clearance to accommodate my transfers via a lift hoist, Ray, the manager, was very understanding and immediately accommodating. He purchased brand new legs that gave us a clearance of 14cm. Now future travellers can be assured of great bed clearance.

RACV Healesville Country Club and Resort (Wurundjeri Country) - Accessibility Review

After 20 months of rolling lockdowns our extended family of 13 were excited to be together again, and even more so to celebrate our much-loved Grandma/Mum’s milestone birthday.

After striking out on finding an accessible holiday home anywhere in Victoria to accommodate 14 of us the RACV Healesville came to the rescue. Set in a naturally beautiful and serene area of Victoria with local natural attractions our stay was a winner for our whole party.

100 Hitchcock, Barwon Heads, Victoria ( Wathaurong Country)-Accessibility Review

Time with my adult daughter is always a treasured activity and I had the joy of sharing a weekend not only with Amy but my sons’ partner’s and their Mum’s too. Talking, roller walking, eating and window shopping were high priorities on this beautiful Winters weekend. Wheelchair accessible 100 Hitchcock was the perfect base for such a relaxing time .

East Hotel, Kingston, ACT (Ngunnawal Country)- Accessibility Review

I have always enjoyed visiting our nation’s capital and have explored it with our young children and sans wheelchair a few times over the years. Canberra’s political and cultural history, the planned beauty of the city and suburbs, the symmetrical town planning of buildings and spires and gardens is enjoyably unique .

We chose the East Hotel nicely located in the Manuka Shopping Precinct through recommendation and proximity to the central city location. Of course everything’s close to Civic in Canberra.

The Reef View Hotel, Hamilton Island, QLD (Ngaro Country)- Accessibility Review

The Reef View Hotel on the edge of the Whitsundays was surprisingly wheelchair accessible in most ways.

I hadn’t stayed in many accessible hotel rooms since I have been wheeling and I recall this hotel being reviewed by one of my favorite accessible travel bloggers - Have Wheelchair Will Travel. I was very impressed by what I saw as a truly accessible room yet disappointingly, as I found out later, this is the only one they offer in their 359 room establishment. That’s less than .3% accessible accommodation available which is a long way under the percentage of disabled travelers of around 10%-15%.

Stamford Plaza Brisbane Hotel (Turrbal Country)-Accessibility Review

The swanky Stamford Plaza is situated in the very accessible central business part of Brisbane, a short roll to many great restaurants and Eagle Wharf. I loved being next to the picturesque and wheel-friendly Botanical Gardens that face the Brisbane River but that was secondary to the fact that it is located in BRISBANE and as a warm climate lover living in Melbourne that is a big 10 out of 10 score at the outset. Breakfast was plentiful and full of variety with a choice of dining in or sitting under a large covered patio area and enjoying the river activity.
