Flying Brick Cider Co – Wadawurrung Country – Wallington, Vic. ~ Accessibility Review

Flying Brick Cider Co boasts expansive space inside and out which is connected by voluminous windows and doors. This restaurant and cidery is truly accessible and inclusive with flat surfaces everywhere, thanks to polished concrete flooring and an accessible toilet.  The huge dining area looks out to a widespread smooth green lawn beckoning outdoor fun.

Best of all there is not a step to be found starting from the many accessible, concreted car parking bays right next to the building. The structural features are complemented by great food and service.

WEBSITE | BOOKING:

https://flyingbrickciderco.com.au/

WHAT WORKED:

Online booking is done directly through their website with an easy-to-use notes section and instant email confirmation. There is also a clearly found phone number to call if need be.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK :

There is no mention of accessibility features on the website*

ACCESS TO VENUE | PARKING:

Fantastic. The smooth gravel car park can be entered from either Bellarine Highway or Swan Bay Road. The six dedicated accessible car parking bays are concreted and closest to the building with the gutter removed for smooth access to the building.

If these bays were full the parking is on a flat compacted gravel surface.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

WHAT WORKED:

The auto-wide sliding entry door

Smooth flat surfaces inside and outside

Tables are reasonably easy to get under, with the option of taller bar tables

Good size accessible toilet with wide doorway

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

Main door to the restroom area cannot be opened by an independent wheelchair user.

SUMMARY:

The service, staff, quality of food and wheelchair accessibility make the Flying Brick Cider Co a popular choice for me when socialising with friends and famifriends'luding my friends’ star assistance dog, Red.

*People with disability, their families and friends can search for venues much easier if there is a description of the accessibility features either in a separate tab or integrated into the description. Images of parking areas, door thresholds, seating areas and bathrooms provide informed decision making and reduce the stress that accompanies many social outings for people with a disability.

Happy accessible living and playing !

IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE:

I look at the ways in which businesses present an overall inclusive experience for their patrons. While I focus on mobility access, I hope to get ideas from you and others to add observations relating to other disabilities. I take a comprehensive look at everything from initial website experience to staff attitudes. I do not comment on food (except sometimes if it’s super fab I might not be able to help myself) as you can have the joy of making up your own mind on that. Finally and importantly, I advise you to research to suit your individual needs but I hope this is a good start.
