Countrywide Cottages – Accessibility Review

Countrywide Cottages, Surf Coast, Victoria

Accessible coastal, bush and pooch friendly cottage charm.

I feel the need to reshare the nature packed, cosy, and accessible benefits of Countrywide Cottages at the edge of Victoria’s Otway Ranges as an update to my previous accessibility review . Three years since our first visit, and about 15 °c cooler at any given time of the day, and we were just as charmed as ever. In fact more so, as the bathroom has been updated beautifully for accessibility with a fresh modern edge. And the wood fire heater blazing away upon entering combined with snuggly doona’s and beds made for such a cosy night for all seven of our happy family.

DATE: March 2017 and June 2020

VENUE: Countrywide Cottages 1205 Deans-Marsh Road, Bambra, Victoria,3241

TO BOOK: Countrywide Cottages Accessible Accommodation

PURPOSE: Pet friendly and accessible holiday accommodation. 4 beautifully furnished and maintained cabins with 1 extensively designed for inclusive living.

My review is on Countrywide’s accessible cabin called the Igloo.

Di, the friendly and lovely owner, and Accessible Accommodation understand the challenges that booking accessible accommodation brings, and provide extensive and detailed doorway measurements and specs together with the all-important and hi-tech images. This peace of mind in knowing just how comfortable you will be is, as most of us realise, an absolute joy. Di is amazingly hospitable and ready and willing to assist with any queries from tourist information to hiring of disability aids.

PARKING: brilliant open space in front of each fully fenced cabin.

STEPS: ZERO

RATING: Where 1 is don’t bother and 5 is gotta come back. – a BIG 5 out of 5

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Di runs a fantastic dog friendly accommodation business. Set amid tall pine trees and bracken fern the area feels much more than the 1 ½ hours away from Melbourne than it is . Its isolated retreat type feel continues with each of the four large cottages spaced very far apart – one cottage being wheelchair accessible.

Gaz, Banjo and I stayed with another couple and their pup the first visit and our three adult children and two partners in 2020. Upon entry into the Igloo we found not only made up beds and towels but beautiful home cooked biscuits – both canine and human varieties as well as a food and drink bowl per dog and a comfy bed and 2 sheets in case they liked to sleep on the couch – such lucky comfort hounds.

Staying onsite is a very charming option for those wishing to just unwind and relax and for those wishing to take in all that Victoria’s Surf Coast and surrounds has to offer. The Countrywide cottages have large fenced rear yards, outdoor benches and table and a games/pool room a short walk away. With bird seed also complimentary upon arrival we enjoyed the colourful afternoon arrival of local Parrots on the verandah.

The cleared yard space makes the use of mobility
devices easier

Being only 20-30 minutes drive from Lorne, Torquay or Geelong the Countrywide Cottages offer wonderful serenity while being close to many recreational venues and areas. Check out the Surf Coast Shire website for all this area has to offer. We picked up a very resourceful Lorne Access Township Map from Di which has recharge stations for motorised devices listed among other helpful accessible features.

There are plenty of walking trails around the Surf Coast Shire with a few being quite accessible. We fully intended to hire the TrailRider ( free with a $100 fully refundable bond) but a small sherpa injury interrupted that plan. The TrailRider is a unique looking 1 wheeled cart type vehicle that a person of limited mobility sits in. The TrailRider requires 2 fit people (the Sherpas) at the front and rear to steer and push, enabling the traversing of paths and tracks that are inaccessible by wheelchairs and scooters. Definitely worth checking out!!

Our cottage, the Igloo, is so spacious and clean with every facility available to us to ensure our stay was comfortable and fun.

Meals are prepared easily in the huge kitchen set out with a roll under sink and stove top. The working area is open and super easy to move around in for a few adults with one being a  wheelchair user.

The beautifully renovated and roomy accessible bathroom is very easy to use as it fits my mobility devices; wheelchair ( either power and manual ) and transfer stand hoist and that extra human help. I have included our photos here and regret that I didn’t take any pics of the bathroom in particular but you will find bathroom images and even more professional pictures on the Countrywide Cottages website.

Di has created a wonderful holiday and rest retreat that we (and my friends ad family) thoroughly recommend.

Just perfect for couples, friends and families of all abilities with or without your pooches.

Take care and happy ( safely appropriate) travelling,
