Captains Cove Apartments – Gunaikurnai country –  Paynesville, Vic ~Accessibility Review

Dockside Inclusive Tranquility

This inclusively designed two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment is a joy to stay in. With a flush roll-in entry via the 1100mm wide sliding door and multiple bathroom shelves, this apartment has been thoughtfully designed and is a very comfortable stay.

We found Captain’s Cove Apartments a great place to start our road trip and spent two nights and days surrounded by the gentle clink of ropes swaying against sail masts on the many boats and yachts docked around us.

The main esplanade of Paynesville and a couple of jetty wanders are a short and easy roll/stroll.

Will and Amy, the property managers, are very responsive and accommodating, making this a great beginning to our holiday.

WEBSITE | BOOKING:

WEBSITE

We originally made our enquiry through the accessibleaccommodation.com listing, which had a plethora of accessibility information on the apartment.

Will from Captains Cove responded very quickly and assisted with all my accessibility queries. The current link to book Captains Cove accessible accommodation is through the Gippslandholidays website.

WHAT WORKS :

  • Clear website offering of the All Accessible Luxury Apartment.

  • Friendly, understanding, and helpful communication with the owners.

  • WHAT DOESN’T WORK:

  • No measurements. *

  • No photos or descriptions of the bathroom and accessible entry.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

WHAT WORKED:

  • Heaps of in-the-wall bathroom shelving – so easy for all the little disability-related stuff. The shelves clearly do not intrude into the all-too-important accessible space.

  • Lovely soft towels.

  • Easy AC system in main living area and bedroom, although the controls are high to access.

  • The height under the main bed is 100mm; bed risers are available on request when booking.

  • 1100mm (flush with floor/ground) wide sliding door entry

  • 1100mm wide and very spacious patio protected from the southerly winds

  • Approximately 1100mm of space to one side of the bed

  • Bathroom and bedrooms-entrance 820mm.

  • 1100mm hallway width

  • Bathroom 2200 mm x 3100 mm

  • Under basin clearance in the bathroom 650 mm

  • Clearance around kitchen bench 1100 mm

WHAT DIDN’T WORK :

  • More Power outlets would be easier for wheelchair and scooter charging – currently 2 in the kitchen and 1 double in each bedroom & bathroom.

  • Initially there was not enough underbed clearance (100mm) for my hoist. We always travel with our bed rises as a backup and Will, the manager, was happy to help Gary put them under the bed easily. Will has assured us that he will have bed risers for future guests.

SUMMARY:

It does feel very good to have your holiday accommodation feel just right. The property managers inclusive attitude and the apartments accessible design made for the type of stay that all people with disability should expect.

IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE:

I look at how businesses present an overall inclusive experience for their patrons. While I focus on mobility access, I hope to get ideas from you and others to add observations relating to other disabilities. I take a comprehensive look at everything from initial website experience to staff attitudes. I do not comment on food (except sometimes if it’s super fab I might not be able to help myself) as you can have the joy of making up your own mind on that. Finally, and importantly, I advise you to research to suit your individual needs but I hope this is a good start.

Happy accessible living and playing!

My reviews are my own and I have not received payment or entered into any contra arrangements with accommodation owners or second-tier providers.

*People with disabilities, their families and friends can search for venues much easier if there is a description of the accessibility features either in a separate tab or integrated into the description. Images of parking areas, door thresholds, seating areas and bathrooms provide informed decision-making and reduce the stress that accompanies many social outings for people with a disability.
